Mendoza, Argentina
Criolla Grande and Criolla Chica
Criolla Chica and Criolla Grande are some of the grapes that made it first to Argentina with the arrival of the Spanish settles a couple of centuries ago. This is a wine to reconsider what Mendoza can give beyond Malbec and other robust grapes like Cabernet Sauvignon. Made from vines that are over 80 years old, grown organically high in the Uco Valley.
The grapes are hand-harvested from Paraje Altamira, at altitude, on limestone-rich soils. 90% destemmed, 10% whole cluster, spontaneous fermentation for 20 days in stainless steel, then élevage for up to 10 months in the same. Bottled unfined, unfiltered, with a minimal touch of sulphur.
It's bursting with fresh red fruit. Strawberries, cherries, a hint of quince. Light-bodied but textured, with a subtle earthiness from those limestone soils. Naturally low in alcohol, high in drinkability. This is a red that thrives with a chill.
