Burgenland, Austria
Zweigelt
Anita and Hans Nittnaus are in Burgenland, one of our favourite regions in Austria. Their family has been in Gols, on the shores of Lake Neusiedl, since 1684. Hans' grandfather Johann established the current estate in 1927, and Anita and Hans took over in 1985.
In a relatively short time, they became one of the leading wineries in the Neusiedlersee region and one of the best producers in Austria. Their vineyards stretch across the northern shore of the lake: the eastern side around Gols, with clay, loam, gravel, and sand, and the western side around Jois on the Leitha mountains, with slate and limestone.
'Zorra' is their rosé, and it's a stunner. Super dry, complex, nothing like those flabby pink things you see everywhere. It's made with Zweigelt and it's more about an earthy something, red currants, rhubarb, and a sea of wild herbs. The earthy soil note we just mentioned, that you rarely find in rosé, but it's what makes this one special. Cool and fiery.
