Syrah
If you know the name Matthieu Barret, it’s probably from his iconic, soulful Syrahs from the steep granite slopes of Cornas. But the man has another project, and it might just be the perfect gateway into his world. Sourced from a biodynamically farmed vineyard an hour south in Visan, this Syrah is everything you love about his style: wild, vibrant, and alive with energy, but delivered with a disarming, easy-going charm.
This is 100% Syrah from clay and limestone soils, and it feels like a sun-warmed version of the Northern Rhône. The nose is a burst of fresh, juicy dark berries shaken up with freshly cracked black pepper, a dusting of lavender, and a subtle, smoky whisper in the background. The palate is where it really wins you over. It’s bright and taut, with a refreshing line of acidity that carries flavours of crushed rocks and earthy undertones. The tannins are present, giving the wine a lovely, grippy structure, but they’re enveloping rather than aggressive.
I had this exact wine on a trip to Lyon, at a tiny wine bar, paired with a bowl of braised lentils and a hearty sausage, and oh my, was it delicious. Would go so well with chicken liver mousse and other easy snacks.
