Vinho Verde, Portugal
Loureiro
Everyone's favourite: Vinho Verde!!! Is it green wine? No. In Portuguese, "green wine" refers to the wine being young, fresh, and meant to be drunk soon after bottling. It also nods to the lush, verdant landscape of the Minho region in northwest Portugal where it's grown. The region is exposed to the sea to the west and the mountains to the east, creating a micro-climate of heavy rainfalls, humidity, and long foggy periods. That sounds like a lot, but what it means is that the wines have great depth and expression.
This is the crispiest of white wines! The kind you chug as if it were cold water because it's sooooo refreshing. But you won't do that because you don't want to get tipsy quickly. We know you won't. We know you have self-control. We have none. That's why we're not drinking this on a Tuesday afternoon.
Ripe grapefruit, yellow plums, crushed little white granite-ish rocks. Fresh, fresh, ice ice baby, with very nice acidity and a long, long, lingering finish.
Drink it cold, with seafood, with salad, with anything you'd want.
