Trebbiano Spoletino
Lorenzo Mattoni comes from a long line of winemakers in Umbria. His specialty is making dry red wines from Sagrantino, the local grape. He doesn't produce more than 800 cases a year, from just nine hectares of vineyards. We loved his Sagrantino. But then we tasted his Trebbiano Spoletino and oh my!!! He macerates the grapes for 25 days on the skins. The colour isn't necessarily screaming "oOoOorange wine!" It's more subtle than that. But the palate has this thick, unctuous structure that might make you think twice about what we even mean when we talk about skin contact. It's very textural and unctuous. The nose is a delight of bitter almond cookies and white flowers. This is the wine you want with a creamy risotto. Or with turbot in an elegant butter sauce.
