Les Vignerons d'Estézargues 'Carambouille' 2024
Rhône Valley, France
Carignan, Grenache, and Cinsault
Apparently "carambouille" is French "mix-up" or "muddle." Which is exactly what this is: a beautiful muddle of Cinsault, Carignan, and a splash of Grenache, all fermented together in stainless steel like they've known each other their whole lives.
This is the wine that proves co-ops don't have to be boring or evil. Most big French cooperatives are in the business of blending the soul out of everything, aiming for a middle-ground that pleases no one. Estézargues is the exception. They've been doing things their own way for years, with most of their growers certified organic and a cellar that stays away from additives.
As said befre, Carambouille is a mix of Cinsault, Carignan, and a touch of Grenache. They're fermented together in stainless steel, then left to chill in concrete for six months. It's a red that feels like it's in a good mood. Round and refreshing with that classic, smoky Southern Rhône berry personality.
Drink it slightly cool.
