Monsant, Spain

Carignan and Grenache

For seven generations, the d’Anguera family has grown grapes on the same Monsant property—a legacy that brothers Joan and Josep quietly revolutionized after their father’s passing.

Inspired by the elegance of France’s Rhône Valley, they shifted away from heavy, high-alcohol wines toward a more delicate, floral, and terroir-sensitive style. They grafted Grenache in place of Syrah, embraced biodynamics, and began foot-crushing grapes—all to craft wines that are both powerful and perfumed.

Planella is the heart of their vision: a 50/50 blend of Carignan and Grenache from 15–50-year-old vines grown on north-facing, sandy limestone slopes. Fermented in concrete and aged 12 months in old oak, it’s a wine that balances savoury depth with radiant energy.

Expect a nose of dried violets, mid-summer black plums, wild garrigue, and crushed white pepper. The palate is both broad and bright—full of spiced dark fruit, earthy depth, and a fluid acidity that carries the flavours like a current.

Perfect with roast duck with herbs, or slow-cooked lamb with rosemary and garlic. This is the wine you bring to the in-laws’ dinner, or finally open with that braise you’ve been dreaming of making all winter.
