Gilvesy George Cuvée
Lake Balaton, Hungary
Welschriesling, Furmint, and Riesling
Robert Gilvesy’s story reads like a plot twist: a Canadian-born son of Hungarian immigrants who traded blueprints for vine plots, leaving an architecture career to reclaim his roots on the volcanic slopes of Mount Szent György in Hungary.
Here, on 13 organic hectares overlooking Lake Balaton, Gilvesy applies a designer’s precision to biodynamic farming, working with native yeasts and minimal intervention. This cuvée—a blend of Furmint, Riesling, and Welschriesling—is his signature pour: hand-harvested, spontaneously fermented in egg-shaped tanks, and aged in stainless steel and Hungarian oak.
The result is a white with balance and volcanic soul. It smells of late-summer peach, marzipan, and warm brioche, while the palate unfolds with savoury stone fruit, roasted macadamia, and a resinous, mineral-driven finish that lingers like a good memory.
Open this for moules-frites, smoked fish dip, or that novel you’ve been saving for a rainy afternoon by the fire.
