Galicia, Spain
Mencía, Mouratón, Grao Negro, Bastardo, and Alicante Bouschet
This is a village red from the roof of Galicia—a high-altitude blend from Viana do Bolo, grown between 650 and 825 meters on pure granite. Fedellos do Couto crafts it from a wild, field-style mix of mostly Mencía, but also Mouratón, Grao Negro, Bastardo, and Alicante Bouschet.
The winemaking is all about finesse: the grapes ferment with 100% full clusters and native yeasts. Then, 60% of the wine matures in used 500L French oak barrels for a year, while the rest rests in stainless steel, preserving pure fruit.
The result is something that feels almost like an Atlantic Pinot Noir, but with a distinctly Galician personality. It's light, it's elegant, it's totally captivating. Tart red berries, pink grapefruit (yes!) , pencil shavings, and raw honey. The palate is harmonious and softly textured, with shy tannins and a clean, mineral finish.
It’s the kind of red that doesn’t need a special occasion. It is the occasion.
Pairs nicely with grilled trout, herby roast chicken, or a platter of cured meats and good conversation.
