Altar de Uco 'Edad Moderna' 2021
Mendoza, Argentina
Sauvignon Blanc and Chenin Blanc
That feeling when you find a well-made Argentinian white that everyone has sort of forgotten about and it's basically five years old. Oh, the magic of patience and time, isn't it pretty? Isn't it pretty when you find a wine that has had time to sleep? To round its edges? To become an adult? It's like dating somebody who is not playing around. Who is simply there for you.
The 2021 Edad Moderna Blanco is like that. It blends 70% Sauvignon Blanc from Gualtallary, that high-elevation beauty, and 30% Chenin Blanc from an old vineyard in Vila Seca. Can you believe? Chenin Blanc in Mendoza? And we didn't know it was there! Full clusters pressed, fermented in concrete egg with indigenous yeasts, then matured in those eggs for eight months.
The wine is serious and austere, but also a bit tropical and citrusy. Lemon rind, pineapple jelly, stony and chiseled focus. Tasty and vibrant, with a long, salty finish. Like a good date! Keeps you interested, leaves you wanting more but answering to your texts!
