Chardonnay
The Santé family has been growing grapes in the Mâconnais since 1848. Then came Régis and Sylvain, the cousins from Marseille who showed up with fresh energy and a shared obsession. Together, they're making really beautiful wines.
The property is in La Roche-Vineuse, between Mâcon and Cluny, and they only have ten hectares. The farming is traditional and respectful with the environment. They believe wine starts with healthy grapes and living soil.
This parcel of Chardonnay was planted in 1971, on clay and limestone soils with a western exposure that catches the afternoon sun just right. The vines are trained in an old local method called arcure mâconnaise, a variation of Guyot where a fruiting branch is arched to control yields and keep sugar and acidity in check. Hand harvested, six hours of cold maceration, then spontaneous fermentation. Aged 12 months in concrete tanks. Bottled without fining or filtration.
Fleshy and ripe, orchard fruit with a little tropical thing sneaking in. Sourdough and dried flowers, a little tea, a little spice. Lots of minerality, brisk acidity. A nose that makes you lean in instead of backing away. A excellent Burgundy at an amazing price point.
