Chatzivaritis Mosaic White 2024
Slopes of Paiko, Greece
Xinomavro, Roditis, and Assyrtiko
Greece doing what Greece does best: blending the old with the you-didn't-know-you-needed.
Vagelis and Olga started growing grapes organcally in the town of Goumenissa back in 1994, but it wasn't until 2007 that they built a tiny winery amidst their vineyards. The name of the wine is pretty self-explanatory, as this is a mosaic that brings together three grapes: Xinomavro (the famous red grape, here made into a white through a blanc de noir press), Roditis (the most planted white in Greece, somehow still under the radar), and Assyrtiko (the one everyone wishes they had more of). Each variety is fermented separately at low temperatures. Roditis and Assyrtiko co-ferment gently pressed, Xinomavro pressed immediately off the skins, then blended and left to hang out on its lees for three months.
Zest first. Lime, orange, a little pineapple, and there's something grounding it all: laurel and tarragon, like a kitchen herb garden just got involved. It's light-bodied but not lightweight. Drink it well-chilled with roasted vegetables, grilled fish, goat cheese, or just because it's Tuesday and you deserve something that tastes like a Greek summer.
