Champagne, France

Pinot Noir and Pinot Meunier

Long before Champagne became synonymous with bubbles, the region made still wine like everywhere else in France. It was a quirk of the cool climate that gave birth to sparkling Champagne as we know it, and the still wine got pushed to the sidelines. In recent years, though, there's been a resurgence of this historic style, going under the appellation Coteaux Champenois. The wines are typically light-bodied, pinkish-red still wines made from Pinot Noir and Pinot Meunier.

Jérôme Bourgeois is the fourth generation of a Champagne-growing family. He could have followed tradition, but he's always been compelled to do things a little differently. His wife Charlotte joined in 2016, and together they farm 6.5 hectares, 40-year-old vines drawing so much magic from clay and limestone soils.

This is their BD'LP Les Pinots, a non-vintage Coteaux Champenois made from 65% Pinot Noir and 35% Pinot Meunier. It's lean, it's vibrant and also sappy. The nose is cherry and raspberry, boysenberry, a little earth, a little clay, a little stone. The palate is light and lean, with high acidity and grippy tannins. Young bottles can be reductive and tight so give it a little bit of room to breath and get ready to enjoy it!

The only made 1,362 bottles.
