Grillo
The Viola family has deep roots in Alcamo, a town perched halfway between Trapani and Palermo on Sicily's northern coast. Just a few kilometres from the Gulf of Castellammare, cool sea breezes drift up onto Mount Bonifato, where limestone and sandy soils make for some of the best vineyards on the island.
Alessandro's father grew grapes and made a little wine for the family. Alessandro went off to study oenology and viticulture, worked abroad, and eventually made his way back to the land he grew up on. His love for Sicilian varieties is the driving force behind everything he does.
His Note di Bianco is all Grillo, sourced from Santa Ninfa and Pietrarenosa, down in the valley at 250 metres. Grillo is hardy, drought-resistant, and reliable, both in quality and quantity. The grapes are picked early in September, pressed immediately, fermented and aged in stainless steel, then bottled with just a trace of sulphur.
The wine is fruit forward, with a pleasant pear skin bitterness. Fresh, bright, citrusy, and salty on the finish. Extremely enjoyable!
