Godello
This is Godello (go-deh-yo), a rare gem from Galicia. If it were a food, it would be oysters with a squeeze of grapefruit, or a perfectly dressed bitter greens salad. It’s all about mouth-watering citrus, a briny kick, and a whisper of smoky granite that comes from the unique, decomposed granite soil (called "sabrego") that it’s grown in.
This wine is the product of a perfect, slightly unlikely partnership. On one side, there’s Matías Michelini, a guy at the forefront of a wine revolution in Argentina. On the other, Alex González, a soft-spoken Galician who’s been tending vines since he was a teenager.
They met, and Matías immediately fell for the tempestuous beauty of Spain’s Ribeiro region: blazing hot one day, pouring rain the next. And this isn't just any region; it's the oldest appellation in Galicia. Picture a tiny, rugged world of steep valleys and mountains at the confluence of three rivers, just a stone's throw from the Atlantic Ocean. Because the terrain is all ravines and slopes, farming happens on a tiny, human scale. Think countless micro-vineyards tucked into the Galician hillsides, which is what makes the wines from here so personal and full of character.
They decided to make wine together here. And how do they make it? They use only pure clay amphoras, a ancient method that lets the pure fruit and stony soil speak for itself, without any fuss. In just a few years, they’ve climbed to the very top.
The best part? The 2020 vintage, this bottle, was made over FaceTime. With travel locked down, Matías guided Alex through the winery from thousands of miles away. No single-vineyard wines were made that year, so all the very best fruit went into this one very special bottle. It’s a taste of resilience and friendship.
