Baratuciat
Summer Wolff is one of those people who just knows her way around wine. American-born, she's worked in almost every corner of the industry, started two import companies, and eventually landed in a tiny village in Monferrato called Montaldo di Cerrina. That's where she lives with her husband Fabrizio Iuli, whose family has been making wine for over a hundred years. In 2021, she started her own project with just two hectares of vineyard.
Baratuciat is an ancient, nearly forgotten grape from the Piedmont region. Summer is one of the few people working with it. The vineyard is only eight years old, so the vines are still young, but the wine is already something special. Fermented spontaneously in concrete, nine days on the skins. Short maceration, so there's texture but not too much. She calls it 'bianco' but we call it 'orange' because why not?
The nose is citrusy, like lemon peel, very chamomile-y, a hint of tea, white blossoms and dried herbs. It's fresh and bright and it also has a little something people call 'funk'. The palate is smooth and very interesting. Only 3,000 bottles made.
