Penedès, Spain
Xarel-lo and Malvasía de Sitges
In 1996, Ramon Parera and Jordi Arnan found an abandoned estate in Penedès with a ruined farmhouse and a hidden cellar, left after the Civil War. They restored it and started making wine their own way.
This white is mostly old-vine Xarel·lo grown in limestone, and a touch of Malvasía de Sitges, fermented and aged in concrete. It smells of ripe pear and melon, quince paste, soft hazelnut. A touch of wild lavender and almond blossom. The palate is generous with apricot and peach, but it's cut through by a flinty, electric acidity and Mediterranean Sea spray.
Would be really good with grilled fish but also paella, if you feel adventurous.
