Burgenland, Austria

Chardonnay, Weissburgunder, Roter Traminer, Muscat Ottonel, and Grauer Burgunder

Gernot and Heike Heinrich took over the family winery in 1985. By 1996, they were already organic certified, pioneers in doing so in Burgenland. In 2006, they converted to biodynamics. They were founding members of Respekt, the certifying body for biodynamic viticulture in Austria.

The vineyards for this orange wine sit on both sides of Lake Neusiedl. That strange, shallow lake we've talked about before, where water flows in but never out. Salty, barely a metre deep, its wild fluctuations create a microclimate where migratory birds and some of Austria's best wine thrive.

Chardonnay, Weissburgunder, Roter Traminer, Muscat Ottonel, and Grauer Burgunder. A bunch of grapes you've probably never heard of in the same sentence, coming together in what we've called the orange wine of the summer. Fermented on the skins for two weeks in stainless steel, then aged for 18 months in clay amphora and large old oak barrels on the lees.

Dripping blood orange. Pomelo pith. Your fingers after peeling a mandarin but in the best way possible. Soaked tea-bag. Juicy, a touch of appetizing bitterness. Super lo-fi, super delicious.

Drink it with anything from grilled fish to roasted vegetables to just sitting outside at the park. Screw-cap, baby. No drama.
