Bianka und Daniel Schmitt Freiheit Riesling 2024

Bianka and Daniel Schmitt are the fourth generation to run this place, and they've spent the last decade making it very clear they're not interested in playing it safe. They farm 16 hectares in Flörsheim-Dalsheim biodynamically, like, actually biodynamically, with Demeter certification that only 80 producers in all of Germany can claim. They're the real deal.

This Riesling is exactly what happens when you let the grapes do what they want. Hand-picked, wild-fermented in barrel, unfiltered, unfined. Just juice, doing its thing.

It tastes like pineapple and gooseberries, golden pears and wet stone. There's a crackle to the acid that keeps everything lifted and electric, but it's never sharp or angry. It's deep without being heavy, playful without being silly. The texture is almost mischievous and alive.

Drink it with spicy Thai takeout, a wheel of funky Munster.
