The river carved it from shale and granite over thousands of years, and people built dry-stone terraces just to make grape growing possible. Pedro Coelho trained at Quinta do Portal and Niepoort (deeply influenced by Dirk van der Niepoort and Luis Seabra) and is making wonderful fresh, mineral-driven wines from high-elevation vineyards in Douro Superior.

His white is a blend of old vines, over 60 years old, planted between 500 and 650 metres. Rabigato, Malvasia Fina, and Códega do Larinho, all classic Douro white grapes. The winemaking is simple: manual harvest, low-temp fermentation in stainless steel, ageing on fine lees to give it volume, minimal intervention.

It smells fresh, like citrus fruit and stone.
