After studying oenology, he worked at Château Grand Tuy Lacaste, at Cos d'Estournel. But it was in El Bierzo, at Bodegas y Viñedos Luna Beberide, where he really made a name for himself. Now he runs his own project, Bodegas Mengoba.

Brezo Tinto is mostly Mencía with a small splash of Alicante-Bouchet, from fifty-year-old vines in Gregory's Horta and Villafranca vineyards, high up in the hills of Bierzo. Mencía is indigenous to Bierzo, and if you have never tasted it before, let me tell you that it feels like something between Grenache and Syrah. Because it's peppery but it also has this very nice florality.

The wine is super fresh. Lots of beautiful purple fruit on the palate, a lactic nose. Almost like nice greek yogurt and pitted cherries. It's a super easy, chit-chatty wine that I should always keep in my cellar because you never know who might show up. Open it slightly chilled, with grilled things, with cured things, with whatever. Have it ready!
